I grew up in southern California with both parents in education, my father an English Literature teacher and my mom a Librarian at Cal arts. In 1988 I earned a Bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from California Institute of the Arts. At Cal Arts I studied with some very famous artists and musicians in L.A. Their influence and mentoring helped me to develop a working method to create art. After residing here now for 27 years, the beauty of Kauai has kept me inspired to keep focusing on my work consistently. As a boat captain working on the Napali Coast, I was able to capture many memorable marine life images shooting offshore from tour boats. As a pro photographer for the last 15 years along with the digital age my work has achieved new levels of quality and diversity. In February of 2000 I won the Hawaii Magazine photo contest with 1st and 2nd place entries. In January or 2006 I won again with 1st and 2nd place and honorable mention entries. In 2010 I won the Islands Magazine photo contest. In the last few years I have a spent many hours flying over Kauai capturing aerial photo’s from motorized hang gliders, helicopters and Cessna airplanes which has allowed for some unique angles.
My favorite cameras to use are my Contax 645 medium format film camera and my Nikon D800E digital 36 megapixel DSLR. I use Fujichrome Velvia 100F film, and Kodak 100 Ultracolor negative film. I scan my film with a Nikon 8000 film scanner which gives me large high quality digital files to work with. I use the latest Photoshop CC software to processthe raw files, fine tune and merge together my panoramic and composite photographs. I do most of my own printing, except for the metal and I can print on photo paper or canvas, with Epson wide format 7900 archival 10 color printer.
